Signify to supply 1.8 hectares LED lighting to Alstroemeria grower Tesselaar

Eindhoven, Netherlands – Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world leader in lighting, today announced that Dutch Alstroemeria grower and plant breeder, H.M. Tesselaar Alstroemeria’s, will move a total of 1.8 hectares of greenhouses to hybrid lighting with Philips GreenPower LED toplighting. Using this hybrid system, the company aims to improve plant quality and increase winter production, while reducing energy costs by up to 50% compared to conventional lighting.

“We are seeing huge interest in LEDs from Alstroemeria growers in recent years,” said Udo van Slooten, Business Leader Horticulture at Signify. “With LED lighting they can improve the quality of their crops by adding light with relatively little heat, and it gives them a cost-efficient way to expand their electrical capacity.”

The hybrid lighting system will be installed in an existing greenhouse and in a new greenhouse by Philips LED Horti partner Certhon according to the light plan designed by Signify’s horticulture specialists. In total 1.8 hectares of greenhouses will be equipped with a combination of 74-µmol/m2/s LED toplighting and 60-µmol m2/s of the existing HPS lighting. “With this combination, we can increase the lighting intensity and lighting hours required by our Alstroemerias, while maintaining acceptable heat levels. This should help us improve both the quality and yields for our crops year-round,” said Manager Melvin Tesselaar.

H.M. Tesselaar Alstroemeria’s will use a light recipe specially designed by Signify to support its growing strategy. Signify has invented specific light recipes for specific crops to help growers further enhance their crop predictability, quality and yields. Using a recipe, a grower can steer specific plant characteristics, including compactness, color intensity, branch development and flowering, to improve results. The company’s light recipe knowledge has been developed over many years of cooperation with growers, universities, and research sites to enhance growth.

Signify became the new company name of Philips Lighting as of May 16, 2018.
