    Description
International House, in Sydney Australia, is the world’s tallest engineered timber commercial office building. Designed by Tzannes in Sydney, the building has 6 floors of commercial office area which are constructed from timber, including floors, columns, walls, roof, lift shafts, egress stairs and bracing bays, supported by a single ground retail level of conventional concrete structure.

Around 3,500 cubic metres of sustainably grown and recycled timber were used in construction. By not using concrete, thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gases were avoided.

    Developer objectives
International House is part of the most important reinvention of Sydney’s historic centre for decades names ‘Barangaroo’. The precinct is a globally significant, 22-hectare, $6+ billion waterfront renewal project that redefines the western edge of Sydney CBD's waterfront. It will be a lasting legacy of 21st Century urban renewal for future generations.

When finished in 2024, half of Barangaroo will be public space, encompassing a continuous 2km waterfront walkway, new parks, plazas and coves – all connected to the central business district and wider Sydney through new transport links, including a ferry hub and a Metro station.

We are well on our way to creating Australia’s first large scale carbon neutral community and we are extremely proud to be delivering this exciting building”

Andrew Wilson, Managing Director - Barangaroo South, LendLease
    Architect’s objectives
Importantly, International House Sydney demonstrates that the commercial real estate market will accept mass timber construction as a viable and exciting alternative to conventional concrete construction, increasing opportunity for architecture to contribute more effectively to a lower carbon and more sustainable future for urban development around the world.

The architecture of International House Sydney reflects a new form of beauty. Beyond shape and surface, it is deep design renewing architecture's role to serve the greater social purpose of lowering carbon emissions”
