    The Diner

    The Diner
    Milan, Italy

Whether guests are recharging or partying, it’s the lighting that sets the mood in this contemporary interpretation of an American icon.

    We focused
    on the function

of the space; we tried to tailor the look and feel of the lighting to the task of what was happening in the space at any given time.”

    Customer challenge

The Diner was created to serve as a functional destination during the Milan furniture fair, Salone del Mobile. The space needed a high-quality LED lighting solution to create a warm and welcoming ambience, helping guests to relax and recharge during the day and let loose and party at night.

    The right lighting

Rockwell Group developed the project for Surface Media with the support of Focus Lighting. Philips contributed fixtures and lighting systems to the project, and its Certified System Integrator Arkilux assisted with installation and programming. The design combines four personalities into one cohesive space: Roadside Diner, East Coast Luncheonette, Midwest Diner and West Coast Diner.

The lighting design created a distinct ambience for each area and harmonized them within the space. The four environments are connected by 14-meter-long central bar, illuminated by track lighting accents and prominent neon lighting above. PureStyle IntelliHue Powercore fixtures, which can mix a palette of RGBA LED color channels at the source, provided subtle color variations that brought out the sophistication of the space.

The lighting was pre-programmed to respond to the function of the space at different times of the day. At lunchtime, higher levels of light and white tints achieved a polished business-oriented look. In the evening, the preset scene transitions into a more saturated color scheme. At night, a multicolor crossfade adds a new energy, facilitating the transition from a relaxed restaurant environment to a nightclub atmosphere.
