Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Riverwalk

    Tampa, United States

Three phases of lighting installation were proposed for this project. For phase 2 of this project, the City of Tampa sought to replace 48 nonfunctioning underwater lights for the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Phase 2 consisted of up lighting sixteen 30 foot plus tall palm trees followed by Phase III where inoperable fixtures underneath the Riverwalk would be replaced.

The intent was to rejuvenate the park area to create a more attractive and welcome space for people to experience at night. During phase I programming, the park saw an increase in foot traffic which continued to grow even after the dedication ceremony of the fountains. Because of the success of Phase 1, the city proceeded to Phase 2 up lighting the palm trees. That created a colorful and inviting seating area near the fountains for visiting patrons. Phase III brought the entire Riverwalk consisting of 125 fixtures along the coast line to current technology to match the previous phase lighting systems.

    Impact on the end user

The Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Riverwalk are a shining example of how lighting impacts and draws local residents to an area that was not previously utilized where they can now safely socialize, run, workout, or attend a food truck events. The synergy between SESCO Lighting and the City of Tampa provided us with an opportunity to design a single project and expand on it, thus benefiting the residents. Additionally, our ongoing service contract makes it easy for the city to hold special events and make lighting changes as needed.
