    A small city is
    lighting the way

    City of Ribeira,

Energy savings of up to 70%

Ribeira is realizing energy savings of up to 70% and enjoying brighter streets thanks to an urban lighting renewal project with CityTouch in the Spanish municipality– implemented by Ferrovial Servicios

The investment in CityTouch was spurred by the  technological capabilities

of the system. It’s an innovative tool with a lot of potential to integrate new services. It’s also scalable and can help a city become ‘smart’.”

    Customer challenge

Ribeira’s Municipal Corporation had two major objectives: to improve energy efficiency and to create well-lit spaces so Ribeira’s people felt safer at night. To achieve this, they needed to renew an urban lighting network comprising over 8,500 light points and incorporating new LED luminaires on the CityTouch system. By streamlining the new lighting and reducing energy consumption, they could invest cost savings in other areas of their Smart City project

    The Right Lighting

In less than six months, 8,600 conventional sodium, halide and mercury discharge light points were replaced by LED lights, with over 6,500 incorporated in the CityTouch system. The plug-and-play system made the setup quick and easy. Automatic commissioning enabled newly connected luminaires to relay performance data like energy consumption and lighting levels almost instantly after setup.

The Municipal Corporation achieved its predicted 70% cost saving, and the high-quality light has made Ribeira feel safer after dark. The sense of safety and improved color after dark has improved day-to-day living for residents.

Operating and maintaining the renewed connected lighting system is easy. With the CityTouch connect app, luminaires can be remotely managed either individually or in groups, in close to real-time or on a pre-scheduled basis. Thanks to the new streamlined maintenance, lighting operators are now one step ahead. They automatically receive notifications if there’s a problem or failure, and can immediately adjust lighting to meet Ribeira’s needs.

The project is one of the largest CityTouch installations in Europe. Ribeira, with a population of around 27,000, proves smart lighting isn’t exclusive to big cities. Small to midsize cities can benefit greatly from CityTouch’s scalability; it’s possible to start small and grow the system with the city’s needs. It’s always possible to increase the number of connected light points gradually, and add more connected points when the time, and the budget, is right. With CityTouch, Ribeira has the option to integrate more services in the future.

CityTouch is a software platform for outfoor lighting. It allows operators to monitor and manage the public outdoor lighting infrastructure. They can also store, visualise, and analyse historical information about luminaire performance.
