UV systems can be used for disinfection of water in a wide variety of applications amongst which drinking water, waste water, process water, swimming pools and ponds. UV lamps are available in wattages from 4W up to 1000W, allowing the design of disinfection systems for small (liters/min) up to very large municipal installations in which several hundred lamps are used.
Households can purify their drinking water by installing UV water purification systems at the point of entry in the home, at the point of use (such as kitchen sink) or via separate purifiers. Next to drinking water, also rain water should be disinfected before use. These UV systems are often combined with filters to remove other substances from the water (chlorine, particles…). Lamp wattages up to 25W are used.
In municipal installations UV is always used in combination with other purification technologies. The required disinfection levels are regulated by the government. UV systems are designed by specialized companies that do the complete validation and installation to guarantee the water quality. Most installations allow dimming of the lamps to adapt the power to the variation of both water quality and water flow. Lamp wattages can go up to 1000W.
Industries require clean and disinfected water for many purposes – production processes (automotive, chemistry, cosmetics), rinsing and cleaning packaging material for food and beverages, agriculture in greenhouses and advanced oxidation processes for semiconductor industry. In all these industries water is used, recycled and re-used. Typical lamp wattages range from 25W to 250W.
