    Produce
    winter crops profitably

    Mežvidi Greenhouse, Latvia

Due to the very low natural light levels in Latvia (some days only 8 J/cm2 per day), Mežvidi Greenhouse could not harvest any sooner than the beginning of week 52. Mežvidi Greenhouse’s objective was to able to produce winter crops profitably: 8,000 kg/week in January at their 0,5 ha greenhouse.

    The right lighting

Mežvidi Greenhouse installed 921 additional LED interlighting and 30 pieces of GreenPower LED toplighting in a 72 square meter area. After many calculations and various measurements, they reached 13 mol DLI per plant.

“We looked at all possible options,” says Romanovskis, “Philips GreenPower LED interlighting seemed ideal in terms of cost and performance. Within six weeks not only were the fruits 10% bigger than those under HPS, energy consumption was reduced by 30% and the serious problem of leaf-burn was also totally eliminated. With the LED interlighting we can have more plants per square meter and reach the maximum plant density earlier, while at the same time maintaining optimal climate and the necessary light level during the dark winter days.”

“We started to have some first breakers already at week 50, but by week 5 of 2014 we reached maximum plant capacity and started harvesting up to 8,000 kg per week”.
