    Customer challenge

UNITE is a progressive purveyor of purpose-built student accommodation. Its mission is to minimize its environmental impact while providing high-quality homes. Following an evaluation of UNITE’s apartments at The Grange, Philips was brought in to renovate the lighting.

    The right lighting

The Grange was in need of some light innovation. The building, which houses 220 students of De Montfort University, is made up of shared flats with communal kitchens and living areas, plus self-contained studio apartments. Following a survey, the decision was made to replace the old fluorescent tubes with state-of-the-art lighting, in order to save energy and improve living conditions.

Philips got to work. LED lighting was installed in all bedrooms, kitchens, common areas, back office spaces and external areas. Circular bulkhead LED fittings were used extensively, thanks to their robust housing and excellent light distribution. The new lights have drastically reduced energy consumption, and have made The Grange a pleasant place to live and work in.

Administration areas, such as reception areas, are using CoreLine Recessed fittings, replacing modular fluorescent luminaires, while Pacific LED fittings have been installed in the laundry room. The lights create a pleasant, clean ambience that makes people feel at home and able to focus. Presence detectors have also been introduced in corridors, and daylight-detecting sensors were added to some rooms, reducing energy waste and saving money.

The improved lighting has created a better environment for students, helping to support their success at university. The building’s energy bills have got significantly smaller, and fewer man hours are now spent on maintenance.
