REDBRIDGE, UNITED KINGDOM

The London Borough of Redbridge is benefiting from the very latest lighting technology – CosmoPolis lamps in high-performance Milewide luminaires, under the control of Philips’ Starsense Telemanagement centralized lighting control system.

Before: Redbridge with SON
After: Rebridge with CosmoWhite

The Borough of Redbridge needed to upgrade the lighting in the town of Ilford in a project involving 275 luminaires. A three-fold solution was adopted: the 60W CosmoPolis lamp and gear system in Philips’ Milewide luminaires, under the supervision of the Philips’ Starsense Telemanagement system. The combination of CosmoPolis and the POT optics of Milewide provide a light source 30 times more efficient than other white light sources in traditional luminaires – energy savings are huge. Also, the Milewide optics permit increased spacing between posts – typically 28-32m in Ilford. This reduced the capital investment needed for the installation.

Starsense provides two-way communication from a central computer with every individual luminaire, allowing it to be switched at will, or, if traffic density is low, it can be dimmed to as little as 20% of maximum to save energy. Moreover, it warns if its lamp or gear is beginning to fail or has failed, eliminating expensive ‘scouting’ to locate luminaire outages.

Mick Trussler, the Borough’s lighting engineer, said: ‘We are a forward-looking Borough, always ready to consider new environmentally-friendly solutions that can save us money in the long term. In fact, we seldom re-use old luminaires these days. In this case, we also wanted to ensure that we implemented the new CEN standards which have recently been released. We have achieved our goals by adopting the new Philips Cosmopolis lamp and Starsense Telemanagement system. We are more than pleased with the results. Milewide luminaries look attractive by day as well as night, and everybody I talk to seems more than pleased with what we have been able to do for them.
