The centre of the Portuguese city of Porto, from Trinity Square in the north to Almeida Garrett Square and Bridge Avenue in the South, has been rejuvenated under an impressive urban regeneration scheme involving three new metro stations, redesigned street furniture, bus stops, benches and litter bins – and a switch from yellow SON lighting to the white light of Philips’ MASTER CosmoWhite and MASTER CityWhite lamps.

The municipality of Porto required environmentally-friendly lighting that combined low energy costs with low maintenance requirements, as well as a greatly improved ambience.
MASTER CosmoWhite and MASTER CityWhite running on PrimaVision electronic ballasts provided an ideal solution. The lamps are lead-free and have a low mercury content, super-efficient CosmoWhite saves energy and therefore cuts CO2 emissions, and PrimaVision gear has a service life of 60,000 hours.
The new warm white light (2800K) has had a dramatic effect on the night-time ambience of the centre of Porto. Users of pavement tables outside cafes now feel that they are comfortably part of the café instead of being outside it, and the squares themselves seem larger and more welcoming. The regeneration scheme for Porto was designed by local architects Álvaro Siza Vieira and Eduardo Souto Moura.
