This building went through an 18-month restoration to be turned to a the Cugó Gran Macina aimed to be a landmark of a different class, a luxury boutique accommodation that will be a showpiece on the historic Cottonera seafront.
The façaade design had to bring the best out of the architecture (expectation of client) whilst respecting the architecture (features and color of stone), and the surrounding environment.
Most important was to bring out the architectural features without dramatizing it too much. Dimming was an important feature to include. The complete lighting design was planned together with the client and government heritage authorities to make sure that the installation will not affect the masonry features of the bastion.
Impact on the end user:
As part of the regerenation of the whol Grand Harbour the façade lighting the Macina Bastion was an important part which has complemented very well with the surrounding port.
