The North Face

Field’s shopping centre, Copenhagen

“The products are presented better and we save a lot of money on electricity. The light also brings an air of calm to the shop which the customers like.”
Henrik Lützen, Shop Manager The North Face Store

The Project

The North Face Store in Copenhagen was totally renovated in the spring of 2011. The shop has been present in Field’s, the biggest shopping centre in Scandinavia, since the centre opened in 2004. The 258m2 shop houses a very large range of The North Face’s world-famous and innovative performance clothing, equipment and footwear.

Before refurbishment, Friluftsland was given a quotation for a lighting solution using metal halogen spotlights. Besides its five shops trading under its own name, the company also owns The North Face shops in Odense, Aarhus and Field’s. However, estimates indicated that it would be possible to save up to €6.500 per year in electricity costs using the latest LED lighting. What’s more, LEDs would generate much less heat in the shops, reducing the costs of air conditioning. “The indoor temperature means a lot – customers leave quickly if it’s too hot, for instance,” explains Shop Manager Henrik Lützen.

The Solution

The North Face Store in Copenhagen is now illuminated by 85 x Philips StyliD LEDspots 24W, with their bulbs concealed deep inside the spotlight. StyliD has a replaceable reflector, is easy to move and position – due to the low heat it generates – and is made of brushed aluminium. Its design won the German iF Award in 2011. “In a centre like Field’s, we compete heavily over store interiors. But the elegant design was only one of the reasons we chose the StyliD LEDspot. Low energy consumption was also important, as was the bulb’s long lifecycle and that clothing would not fade because LED lights do not emit UV radiation. Colour reproduction is also very good,” explains Lützen. “We decided to use the spots to present all our products uniformly, without special focus on any particular lines. That’s given the shop a new openness, which the customers also like as it makes it easier for them to find the goods they want by themselves.”

Even though the shop has more fittings than before, The North Face Store expects to half its electricity costs for lighting. In practice, this corresponds to a saving of around €6.500 per annum. In addition is the fact that the lights will not need replacing until about 10 years time, thanks to the longevity of MASTER LEDbulbs. Savings will also be achieved from being able to turn down the air conditioning, as LED lights generate less heat. Finally, the quality of the light and its excellent colour reproduction have additional benefits. Lützen adds: “The light is softer and more natural, bringing an air of calm to the shop which the customers like.”
