Marqt Haarlem
Haarlem, the Netherlands
“The functional form of the TMX400 mounting units augments the authentic atmosphere that Marqt wants to create. And the MASTERColour Elite compact HID lamp emphasises the colours and freshness of the entire product range fantastically.”
Mark van der Geest, Interior Designer
The Project
Marqt is the name of a new shop concept where you can only buy local fresh produce, just like at a real market. No mass-produced goods, no foods with colourings. The shop’s location and interior also distinguish it from an average supermarket. The motto “honest and sustainable” is valid in this regard too. Whilst the first Marqt shop in Amsterdam started in an old machinery factory, the second shop in Haarlem is situated in a former garage. The industrial character of this environment, with its concrete roof panels and floor, demands lighting which fits perfectly with this concept.
“With the first shop in Amsterdam my basic idea was that the lighting level should be very low and that all our effort had to concentrate on accentuating the product range through lighting,” Mark van der Geest, Interior Designer, says. “I quickly went back on that idea, because it created an image which was too sophisticated, and which didn’t fit with Marqt’s ‘back to basics’ feel. In the Haarlem shop, I was convinced by the Philips lighting designer that Marqt’s concept would really come into its own if I brought the lighting up to a high level, and if I cleverly lit the product range with accent lighting.”

The Solution
The shop is 60 metres in length, with a neat strip of lighting down the centre. For general lighting, TMX400 mounting units with 58 Watt TL-D fluorescent lamps were placed on both sides. The clear and warm white light enhances the daylight and allows you to fully experience the shop. For accent lighting, Magneos spotlights fitted with MASTERColour CDM-TC Elite 930 were installed parallel to the central strip on light tracks. This bulb has perfect colour rendition throughout its entire lifespan. This way, the groups of fresh produce are lit magnificently and true to their colour. Only the lighting of the meat section required an exception, because of its special colour requirements. Here, the MASTER SDW-T with its low colour temperature ensures that the red colours are emphasised beautifully, which makes the meat look especially appetising.
“Philips’ light plan is working,” enthuses van der Geest. “The functional form of the TMX400 mounting units augments the authentic atmosphere Marqt wants to create. And the MASTERColour CDM-TC Elite lamps bring out the colours and freshness of the entire product range fantastically.” It is expected that new Marqt locations will also be fitted with this lighting solution.
