After The 1975 exploded on to the music scene and begun playing sold-out gigs at big venues like Brixton Academy and the Royal Albert Hall, the band re-evaluated its stage and lighting design. They found an ideal match with Tobias Rylander of US show design collective Seven Design Works.
Rylander’s design is gritty, moody and hypnotic, with 12 dynamic VL3500 Wash FX luminaires at its core. Using only white light of varying color temperatures, Rylander designs the dark as much as he does the light.
Sharp geometric shapes are traced out from the LED square frames that form the backdrop to the band, which morph into melting, almost dripping light, before jolting back to fast-moving solid lines and structures. Color temperature and light levels are used to accentuate the mood.
Rylander uses the VL3500 Wash FX as both a spot and wash, shooting powerful columns of light into the audience.
