Philips Entertainment Lighting luminaires are being used by CGR Cinemas to deliver a breakthrough immersive movie theater experience for the premiere of Luc Besson’s new film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.
The project is part of a country-wide installation of more than 400 Showline LED luminaires in 20 CGR movie theaters as part of a pioneering new Immersive Cinema Experience designed by CGR.

Philips Showline SL PUNCHLITE 220 and SL BEAM 100 fixtures were selected to provide LED color-changing ambient lighting to complement the surrounding video effects and the on-screen movie action, creating a unique enveloping visual and auditory experience. The system will transform the auditoriums into ICE (Immersive Cinema Experience) venues, intensifying the viewing experience by extending feature films, trailers, advertising and other on-screen content out into the audience.

Niels Van Duinen, Senior Director of Business Development at Philips Lighting, explains why Philips Showline luminaires were selected: “Philips Showline offers an amazing color gamut and color accuracy, plus the best combination of size and performance. The adjustable (zoom) optics enables us to create the perfect color wash in each auditorium, despite differing sizes and layout. The robust design, the longevity of the LED engines and the high-quality mechanics of these lights also guarantees reliability and low maintenance.”

Sébastien Bruel, Chief Technical Officer at CGR Cinemas said: “Cinema is a collective experience first and foremost and with ICE we ensure that everyone in the audience is at the heart of the action. The ICE system with the Philips Showline luminaires is the only lighting solution which allows us to create a cocoon of dynamic light and visuals around the viewers, taking their entertainment to the next level.”

CGR has opened its first ICE auditoriums in La Rochelle, Blagnac (Toulouse), Torcy (Paris), Clermont-Ferrand, Villenave d’Ornon (Bordeaux), Brignais (Lyon), while two more will be released in La Mézière (Rennes) and Saint-Saturnin (Le Mans). By the time of the Valerian release, CGR will have opened 12 LightVibes auditoriums in addition of these 8 ICE premium screens. Under the Philips Lighting and CGR Cinemas partnership, there are plans to expand the project internationally.
