Outdoor Lighting workbook

A knowledge center for urban lighting applications

city.people.light is an integrated approach to experiencing the urban setting through light. The Online outdoor lighting workbook allows you to explore the ideas of city identity and melting cultures. You can also learn how people connect to a city and discover sustainable lighting solutions that show social responsibility.

Our city philosophy

Cities belong to the people who live there. Their mood creates the atmosphere so providing lighting that gives a feeling of belonging and security is very important. But we also want to make smart things that last longer because they have more than one purpose. A luminaire can be a sign, an interface or a bench. And because we understand the importance of darkness, our design solutions are about light, not luminaires.

Lighting for pedestrians

A myriad of different techniques and technologies are available to illuminate the city for pedestrians. Light projected directly onto a surface can be as clear and distinct as sunlight, indirect light can be reflected onto surfaces for good visual comfort or diffused to eliminate shadows. And direct or guiding light assists with orientation, so people can find their way safely around the city.

Lighting the city’s architecture

Architects are fascinated by the ever-changing richness and drama of natural light as a source of inspiration for their buildings. The visual appearance of architecture and the city during the day is continually modified by the direction and colour of the natural daylight. But at night only the surfaces that are lit remain visible. Grazing light can reveal textures, backlighting creates silhouettes and accent lighting puts features in the spotlight. Our outdoor lighting solutions can enhance both form and function, bringing a sense of excitement and drama to the cityscape at night.
