Indoor positioning:

A Gartner Market Guide

The growing market for indoor positioning

When businesses bring the power of location services indoors, they can achieve many goals that were never attainable before. Retailers can enhance shopper experience with wayfinding and in-store promotions. Employers can offer mobile apps that let employees personalize the lighting and temperature at their workspaces, making them more comfortable and productive. Businesses can help warehouse staff work more efficiently with easier product finding and location-based stocking instructions.

In a new report, “Market Guide for Indoor Location Application Platforms,” leading industry analysts Gartner survey the current state of the indoor positioning (IP) market. Interest in IP is keen across dozens of application areas, with strong adoption in retail and healthcare. But the IP vendor landscape remains fragmented, and I&O professionals must choose carefully.

“I&O leaders need to dene their primary business outcomes and look for platforms that can be augmented to avoid switching vendors down the road,” write analysts Annette Zimmerman and Tim Zimmerman. Gartner recommends selecting “indoor application platforms that are as open as possible — those that integrate with various third-party beacons, additional sensors and applications to avoid switching providers down the road.”

Strong partnerships for customized solutions

In the Market Guide, Gartner states, “Of all the vendors we have interviewed over the past two years, it is safe to say that nearly all of them provide point solutions, solving just one business issue or addressing only one isolated use case.” This means that “enterprises have been adopting different solutions from distinct vendors to meet their needs.”*

At Philips Lighting, we believe that a strong network of partnerships is essential to designing end-to-end solutions that may be easier for businesses to acquire, manage, and extend. As a consequence, we collaborate with industry leaders in digital mapping, search, customer engagement, retail IT, barcode scanners, electronic shelf labels, and robotics to deliver integrated, customized solutions. We can work with your partner of choice, or we can refer you to the proven partners in our ecosystem.

Adding location analytics to the infrastructure

Indoor positioning from Philips Lighting uses the native capabilities of LED luminaires to bring the power of GPS indoors. With indoor positioning, retailers can offer indoor navigation and location-specific services to customers, enhancing the shopper experience and promoting engagement. Retailers can also improve store efficiency with the data and analytics that the system provides.

In the Market Guide, Gartner recognizes Philips Lighting as a representative vendor in the indoor positioning space.

This white paper describes how Philips Lighting uses indoor positioning to unlock the value of retail apps with lighting.
