Carbon neutral

A carbon-neutral company  by 2020

Our world is changing. Population growth, resource challenges and digitalization require immediate action in order to meet the needs of our customers and planet. Philips Lighting, the global leader in connected LED products, systems and services, takes a leading role to bring better light to the world and to help provide a more sustainable future.

As part of our overarching company vision, we have already made great strides in minimizing our impact on the environment. We have reduced our carbon footprint by 42% since 2007, and now we are taking the next steps. As part of our new sustainability program, ”Brighter Lives, Better World”, Philips Lighting is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2020. This commitment to carbon neutrality includes combustion in operations, purchased electricity, logistics and business travel1

We declared our intention to become carbon neutral at the UN Climate Change Conference COP21 in late 2015.

1) The carbon neutral commitment includes our operational carbon footprint as defined in the Philips annual report. It covers full scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, and emissions from both logistics and business travel.

How will we achieve this goal?

The road to becoming a carbon-neutral company will require concerted effort in all areas of our business.

What have we accomplished so far?

  • From 2007 until 2015, we reduced our carbon footprint by 42%.
  • We increased our use of renewable electricity from 10% in 2007 to 58% in 2015.
  • We’re members of the RE100 program – a collaborative initiative of influential businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity.
  • We received top results (100/A) in the 2013, 2014 and 2015 Carbon Disclosure Project, the world’s largest benchmarking organization on topics of climate change, water supply and deforestation.
  • We achieved the status of Industry Group leader in the 2016 Dow Jones Sustainability index, obtaining “Best in Class” scores in the Environmental and Social Dimensions.
