Innovation is our
highest priority

and we want to raise the bar in terms of data analysis, delivering new insight into the use of the office space. It shows how we can reduce CO2 emissions from buildings and create a more sustainable world.”

Customer challenge

The Edge is an innovative, 40,000 m2, multi-tenant office building in the Zuidas business district in Amsterdam. The main design goal was to create an intuitive, comfortable, and productive environment for employees that could serve as inspiration for sustainable building designs around the world.

The right lighting

OVG and Deloitte worked closely with Philips Lighting to deliver InterAct Office, a smart connected lighting system and software applications, that uses cutting-edge technologies, to deliver services that enhance the flexibility of the open-plan office.

It not only allows employees to personalize the lighting and temperature at their workspaces using a smartphone app, but it also provides building managers with real-time data on operations and activities. This data allows facility managers to maximize the buildings' operational efficiency and optimize office space as well as reduce the building’s CO2 footprint.

The system uses nearly 6,500 connected LED luminaires to create a digital lighting infrastructure throughout the building’s 15 stories. Integrated sensors in 3,000 of these luminaires collect granular anonymous data on occupancy and light that is fed into a centrally hosted software dashboard, where the system captures, stores, shares and distributes information about the illuminated spaces.

Operations and infrastructure managers use the software to visualize and analyze real-time and historical occupancy data, enabling them to make fact based decisions on space optimization and workplace design as well as allowing them to track energy consumption and to streamline building operations.

Installing InterAct Office has resulted in an annual reduction of €100,000 in energy costs and an impressive €3.6 million savings in space utilization. Almost 1,000 more staff now work in this smart connected space than was originally intended, making The Edge Deloitte’s least expensive office globally as well as its most popular – with the firm experiencing four times more applicants than average applying for jobs.
