The challenge

The Kreuk family has continually invested in cutting edge technology to improve their growing process. Seeking to create a multilayer system in the greenhouse, they conducted a trial of LED grow lights.

The right lighting

The Maatschap Kreuk greenhouse is a master piece of horticultural innovation. It currently uses LEDs, multilayer cultivation, ebb and flood systems, intelligent logistics solutions, an outside air intake system, and a temperature control system. During the 2010-2011 forcing season, the company trialled LED grow lights to see if they could promote the flowering of tulips and support greater elongation during the growth phase.

The trial took place in a non-daylight room using Philips GreenPower LED production modules. A plant specialist from Philips and installer Van der Laan were closely involved in developing the perfect light recipe and creating the optimal setup.

The results were positive, and the Kreuk family was able to achieve the growth it wanted from LED greenhouse lighting. It has subsequently set up a three-layer system, the lowest one being fitted with Philips GreenPower LED production modules. The new system has improved the quality of the tulips, which now have a deeper quality green and greater elongation. And thanks to the energy-efficient performance of LED, the green house is growing better plants at a lower cost.

Energy-efficient LEDs are growing savings too. One 35-watt LED module can replace two fluorescent tubes of 58 watts each, creating an electricity saving of 65%.
