Customer challenge

Increasing the success rates of tissue culture propagation can be a challenge for many greenhouse operations and growers, often requiring a unique strategy to properly and correctly manage factors that impact propagation and transplant success. Battlefield Farms recognized an opportunity to adjust their propagation strategy to improve their Heuchera tissue culture propagation and transplant rates and turned to Philips horticulture LEDs.

The right lighting

Marco Verdel, Battlefield Farms Head Grower Manager, learned of the successes that vegetable growers in Europe were experiencing with LEDs and began investigating LEDs as a possible solution to Battlefield Farms’ propagation challenges.

Verdel and Travis Higginbotham, worked with the Philips Horticulture LED team to set up a trial using Philips GreenPower LED production module with a light spectrum of DR / B. The results of the LED production module trial exceeded Verdel’s expectations and were documented and reported by Battlefield Farms as follows:

  • 100% transplant success rate with Heuchera ‘Blackout’
  • 92% transplant success rate with Heuchera ‘Caramel’
  • 85% transplant success rate with Heuchera ‘Citronelle’

“Problems with transplant timing, labor efficiency and overall root and shoot quality were solved, not to mention we decreased losses significantly” - Marco Verdel, Head Grower Manager

Philips GreenPower LED production module

LED lighting for multi-layer cultivation in growing environments with little or no daylight. Our production module offers significant energy savings compared to comparable grow lights, and low radiative heat emission allows for more efficient use of growing space.
