Access to electricity
Putting off-grid lighting to good use
Today, some 500 million people in Africa do not have access to electricity. Off-grid lighting is bringing light and hope to many such communities.
Bringing communities together
In equatorial regions, darkness falls around 6.30 p.m. and remains for almost 12 hours. Life in these communities simply comes to a halt, affecting education, security, productivity, employment and quality of life. Off-grid lighting solutions are allowing communities and villages to come together after dark. In particular, Philips’ mini floodlighting solution, featuring eight LED floodlights suspended from four portable poles, has been designed for areas with limited or no access to electricity. Power comes from solar-powered batteries, and the system is therefore completely sustainable.
Road lighting
By installing efficient, bright street lighting, local authorities can improve road safety for drivers and pedestrians, create more attractive conditions for businesses and commercial life, and generate a more secure and comfortable outdoor environment for residents. A successful example is the installation of Philips’ off-grid lighting solutions on 420 km of roads in Ghana’s two main cities, Accra and Kumasi. This project created much-needed local employment and now enables more commercial activities to take place in the evenings.
Turnkey solution
We offer the floodlight system as a complete turnkey project solution, tailored to each customer’s requirements, and including everything from the total system design to the floodlights, masts, batteries and solar panels.
Diverse applications
Our off-grid floodlighting solutions can be used for a variety of key applications: general area floodlighting, sports activities and events, roads and junctions, security, economic activities such as markets, and construction work. In the developed world there are many areas which need temporary lighting and which are not connected to the electricity grid. In addition, the drive for sustainable solutions is increasing. The off-grid floodlighting system continues Philips’ track record of applying innovation to solve lighting challenges in parts of the world where lack of electricity impacts the quality of life.
