Philips announces first intelligent UV air purification system for maximum security of air disinfection and minimum maintenance intervention.

Royal Philips Electronics (AEX:PHI, NYSE:PHG) has announced the introduction of the new TUV PL-L Intelligent system consisting of a compact fluorescent UV-C lamp and an electronic driver . The system offers the ideal solution for areas where maximum security of hygiene and air quality is crucial and requires only minimum maintenance intervention.

The Philips TUV PL-L intelligent system is built into air purification equipment to deactivate micro-organisms. The lamp contains a high-technology RFID chip that communicates with the antenna in the gear. As a result the intelligent driver automatically recognizes the lamp wattage and adjusts itself to the right settings. Moreover, the antenna reads and stores data, such as the number of times that the lamps are switched on and the amount of burning hours. This means that the data no longer needs to be registered manually, eliminating the risk of human error or omission. It is also possible to program warning levels of burning hours and/or number of switches. This allows for reduction of maintenance intervention and costs, because manual check-ups can be reduced to an absolute minimum.  Moreover, the driver will check the proper functioning of lamp and gear and if required it will switch off the system. If this occurs, a failure code will automatically be stored in the RFID chip, allowing for easy problem identification and resolving.

The Philips TUV PL-L Intelligent system is built into air purification equipment and is the ideal solution for areas where hygiene is crucial, such as the food and beverage industry, laboratories and hospitals. Micro-organisms, e.g. bacteria and viruses, in these areas can contaminate people or products. As a result, people may become ill and products may need to be recalled from the market, damaging the reputation of the organization or company involved.

The electronic driver will operate TUV PL-L lamps of 36, 55, 60 and 95W.  The first air purification equipment making use of the Philips TUV PL-L intelligent system is the AirStream range from BÄRO GmbH & Co, the leading company in the production of air purification systems for the Food & Beverage industry. The AirStream, announced at Anuga FoodTec fair In Köln (March 10-13, 2009, hall 10.1, row B.30) will be available in the second half of 2009.
