Philips develops revolutionary EcoBoost energy-saving technology for halogen lamps

The unique EcoBoost technology realizes massive energy savings for halogen lamps - and also enables the creation of a brand-new lamp category.

Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) has patented a unique technology - known as EcoBoost - which leads to dramatic levels of energy saving for halogen lamps. Depending on the type of lamp in which EcoBoost is used, energy usage decreases by between 40% and 60% compared to standard halogen or incandescent lamps. This is obviously beneficial to the environment and also makes sound business sense. Lamps incorporating EcoBoost have a markedly lower cost of ownership throughout a much longer lamp lifespan.

More light, less heat

The EcoBoost technology is based upon optimizing heat management of the integrated electronics and burner. On the burner, a special compound conducts away the heat, keeping it cooler and ensuring that more electricity is converted into light. Another resulting benefit is that the burner is less likely to break, which lengthens the lifespan.

Bright and sparkling

Importantly, the EcoBoost technology does not affect the light quality of the lamp in any way. As a result, the high quality ambience and color rendering associated with halogen - often described as bright, sparkling white - is preserved. EcoBoost will be of particular interest to retail and hospitality customers, where energy saving, long life and light quality are key considerations. EcoBoost lamps are ideal for general and accent lighting in shops, hotels, restaurants and home lighting applications, allowing the optimal display of merchandise and mood setting.

First Compact Halogen Lamp integrated (CHL-i)

The realization of the new EcoBoost technology has led to the creation of a brand-new lamp category; Compact Halogen Lamp integrated (CHL-i). It offers another energy-saving alternative (in addition to the CFL-i lamps invented 25 years ago by Philips) to inefficient incandescent bulbs. CHL-i lamps are characterized by a small, single-ended burner and incorporate all necessary electronics in their compact housing. This is a revolution; an integrated, energy-saving compact halogen lamps that can be plugged directly into a standard light fitting! This allows direct competition with conventional incandescent lamps, because the CHL-I equivalent uses 50% less energy and lasts three times as long

Appearance-wise, CHL-i lamps have the classic light bulb 'pear' shape, and can therefore be unobtrusively incorporated in virtually any interior decor. This is a first for halogen lamps. With an unrivalled combination of looks, low energy consumption and light quality, CHL-i lamps offer the best of all worlds.

As well as being used in the new CHL-i category, EcoBoost will be applied to existing 50mm & 111 mm reflector and capsule halogen lamps. It is the intention that EcoBoost will also be applied to more lamps in the future.
