Philips announces exciting new “feel good” lamp range, which makes people feel more alert, awake and energised.

Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) – Frankfurt 24 April 2006. Philips has announced the launch of ActiViva – a revolutionary new lamp range, which not only provides high quality lighting but also directly affects the way people feel, by making them more alert, awake and energised. In field tests done with ActiViva lamps, people indicated an increase in their own performance of 10% or more. Philips invites potential users to try this new lighting and join us in building up experience with this exciting new technology.

The launch of the new ActiViva lamps is a result of recent research. In 2002, a 3rd receptor (besides cones and rods) was discovered in the human eye. This receptor is highly sensitive to blue light and sends a signal to our body clock which controls our biological rhythms such as our sleep/wake cycle and hormone secretions during certain periods of the day or month.

During the last few years a lot of discussion has taken place within the lighting industry on how to translate these new insights into lighting solutions. For lighting solutions, these biological aspects had to be brought in, as well as the traditional visual and emotional aspects. Early 2003, Philips launched dynamic lighting, in which both the lighting level and the colour temperature are changed to support the human rhythms (www.dynamiclighting.philips.com ).

Since 2002, Philips has also been involved in laboratory tests at the Universities of Surrey (UK), Jefferson (USA), Eindhoven and Groningen (NL) with lamps with an increased blue content. Additionally various field tests were done. Examples are a study in a call centre in the UK done by vielife and a study last winter at the Distribution Centre Brabant in the Netherlands, where the new ActiViva “Active” lamps were installed in the parcel desk area.

The outcomes of these tests have driven the market introduction of the new ActiViva lamp range. The ActiViva lamps contain an optimised amount of blue light resulting in a high colour temperature, whilst meeting all relevant lighting norms and standards.

In field tests done with ActiViva lamps (applications where the existing lamps were replaced by their ActiViva alternative), people indicated an increase in their own performance by10% or more. This high score calls for more testing in order to learn more about the effects of the ActiViva lamps. Another outcome was that more than 80% of the people wanted to keep the ActiViva lighting after an adaptation period. This was unexpected as it was assumed that high colour temperature lamps would score low on acceptance according to current ruling insights.

These results also indicated two ways in which to apply ActiViva lamps: firstly the use in conventional lighting installations to create an energising environment. Secondly, the ActiViva lamps can be used in dynamic lighting solutions to extend the colour temperature range. Thereby creating a healthy, stimulating working environment in the most efficient way.

Dr Peter Mills, Chief Health Officer of vielife, the consultants who have been involved in carrying out research in a call centre for a major insurance company in the UK says, “ Under the new lighting technology individuals found that they had better memory, improved concentration and that they were more alert. Productivity was also improved in terms of the increase in the number of calls that were handled and the decrease of the number of calls that were missed or abandoned. The important thing about the research was that we had a control group running alongside the active intervention group and there was a clear difference between these two groups. So the results were very encouraging suggesting that lighting can impact on people’s day to day performance and how they feel.”

The new ActiViva lamps will be available from September 2006. The range consists of two types. A “Natural” version and an “Active” version. The ActiViva "Natural” version contains 25% more blue light than cool daylight lamps, can be combined well with other light sources in existing installations and will be available in TL5 and TL-D. If a total area is changed to a new installation, the use of the "Active" version, which provides 85% more blue light than cool daylight lamps, gives the best result as it has the highest blue light content. When used in indirect lighting, the “Active” version can create a real sky effect. It also comes in TL5. All types will fit directly into existing fittings

Philips main message to potential users is simply this: try this new lighting and join us in building up experience with this exciting new technology.
